Carlos Alberto Torres worked in Buenos Aires 1974-1975 with Paulo Freire’s publisher, Julio Barreiro editor of Tierra Nueva, who requested Carlos to write a critical book about Freire’s work. As a result, Carlos’ research and writing resulted in the publication of several articles in refereed journals and a trilogy of books published in 1978-1980 in Portuguese and Spanish. Freire read some of the work of Carlos in 1976 and from that moment on they worked together on many projects. When Freire was Secretary of Education of the City of São Paulo, Carlos was invited as his adviser (1989-1991)– see the letter of appointment in this blog. In 1991, together with Paulo Freire, Moacir Gadotti, José Eustaquio Romão, Walter García and Francisco Gutierrez they created the first Paulo Freire Institute in São Paulo (1991). Carlos continued working on creating several Paulo Freire Institutes institutes in several parts of the world. He is currently the Director of the Paulo Freire Institute in São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and UCLA, and also is co-international director of the Paulo Freire Institute in England.
